Is there a formula to follow?

What is “style?” To have style, do you have to spend a lot of money on expensive items? Does a stylish home have furniture and decorative items all from a particular era—like Baroque or Modern? What does it mean to “decorate with style?” Our answers to these questions may surprise you!

No Formula

There isn’t a mystery formula that you have to learn in order to decorate with style. Everyone can have a unique style because your decorating style reflects you. Style expresses your attitude and exhibits things that you like.  Wikipedia says that “style is a manner of doing or presenting things.” Coco Chanel said of style, “Fashion fades, only style remains the same.” Though she was speaking of fashion and not home décor, the meaning is that a personal style will be the same regardless of trends that come and go. And also note that style doesn’t require you to spend a lot of money. Your personal style can be achieved on a thrifty budget.

Your Style

What do you like that can be reflected in your style? Do you like bright or soft colors? Do you like overstuffed furniture or a more minimalist form? Do you like sparkly decorative items or more of a subtle approach? Do you like an eclectic look with different types of items from different eras? These questions can get you thinking about the “look” you want to achieve in decorating your home. Here are three aspects of decorating that can guide you when developing your own style.

One of the first things that people notice in a room, even if it is not consciously, is color. According to an article in House Beautiful, colors can be used to influence your mood. Some people gravitate toward bright colors (think turquoise and coral) while others go toward neutrals (such as gray or beige). You need to enjoy your space, so the colors you choose should be colors that make you happy and soothe you.

There are many ways you can bring the colors you like into a room. You can paint the walls in order to be the backdrop for all the items in the room. Or, if you like bright colors but don’t want them to be overwhelming, you can bring them out in decorative items like pillows, seat cushions, dishes, lamps, and rugs. Just follow simple color wheel guidelines as to which colors work together. If you aren’t sure, do some research on using different colors.

Different types of furniture can be mixed to bring an eclectic style to a room. This makes for a more interesting space than if every piece of furniture is the same. However, to achieve a sleek, clean design you may want to use matching sofas, chairs, and ottomans. It really comes down to your preference. Look at a lot of pictures to get an idea of what you like and what your style is.

You can really add to your decorating style with the lighting you choose. According to, “lighting is one of the key elements that helps make your house a home.” There are so many lighting fixtures, lamps and shades from which to make your selections that it can be a bit overwhelming. But, again, think about the overall look and feel for the room and select lighting that will enhance it.

We hope these guidelines have helped get you started thinking about your individual style. Our final advice is to give it thoughtful planning and, in the end, just have fun with it!
